How did you select an organization to support? What would you want someone to know about the organization?
At the beginning of my career, I immediately identified the Homeless Advocacy Project (HAP) as something I wanted to be a part of. Homelessness is far too prevalent in our society and its effects are far too often ignored. HAP helps give a voice to people who otherwise would not be heard, and reminds those who have lost hope that they are deserving of it. That is a mission that epitomizes the compassion and humanitarianism that should always be at the heart of being an attorney.
Why should other lawyers get involved in pro bono service?
It is easy to get lost in the everyday practice of law and lose sight of why one became an attorney in the first place. Ideals of justice and altruism are what drove us to this profession, and pro bono service is a great reminder of that spirit.
What advice do you have for lawyers who want to get involved in pro bono service?
Identify a cause that you have a personal connection with, and devote yourself fully to it just as you do in your daily practice. The benefits will far outweigh the efforts put in.
